When the current owners of Bitterroot River Retreat first toured the property they knew that their dreams had come true. Nestled in the majestic Ponderosa pine trees and minutes from the Town of Hamilton was 14 private acres on the world famous Bitterroot River. Both are passionate about flyfishing and the opportunity to walk off the back porch to cast a line on the 1000 feet of river frontage was thrilling.
The property has historical significance as it was previously owned by renowned conservationist Otto Mose Teller. Otto Teller was an avid fly-fisherman and hunter who spent over 50 years in the Bitterroot Valley. He used his influence to purchase river and farm properties for conservation purposes. Otto Teller was instrumental in the creation of the Teller Wildlife Refuge in the Bitterroot Valley which is a 1200 acre private non-profit refuge open to the public. His deep connection with the Bitterroot River was evident when he purchased the land which is now being offered for sale. This was Otto's final summer home.
In keeping with the natural beauty of the river the owners designed a riverside cabin style home to compliment the native flora and fauna. Natural and reclaimed materials were used in the construction of the 3900+ sq ft main house complete with over 1500+ sq ft of covered and screened in porches. The exterior utilizes a maintenance free corten roof and rough edge pine board on board siding.
As you enter the residence the history of Montana is evident throughout. The main foyer utilizes slate and pine with a custom designed chandelier. The guest bath is rich with a river stone shower, copper showerhead, a custom vanity with copper miners basin, reclaimed wood wainscoting and miner's lanterns. Across the foyer is a separate office complete with a custom desk, built in bookshelves and solid double sliding doors.
Your eye will immediately capture the view of the Bitterroot River through the picture windows strategically placed in the living room and screened in entertainment porch. The living room utilizes diverse textiles with the river rock hearth, reclaimed Brentwood siding, direct and indirect lighting and efficient wood stove.
Entertainment is easy with the well thought out chef's kitchen. Granite slab countertops with copper backsplash and custom reclaimed oak cabinetry support the Viking 6 burner cooktop, double Viking ovens with separate warming drawer, hammered copper double sink, Viking refrigerator/freezer, Bosch dishwasher and Sharp microwave drawer. Each built- in appliance has custom reclaimed oak fronts to match the kitchen cabinetry. Extra storage, cabinets, and counter space is adjacent in the butler's pantry.
Four dining environments are offered adjacent to the kitchen. The formal dining room is an elegant alcove with suede half walls, coved lighting, custom chandelier and water glass cabinets. The built in kitchen dining nook is wonderful for casual dining. The full size counter bar is a perfect place for a quick morning breakfast and the screened in entertainment porch is a favorite place for summer gatherings.
The master suite is on the main level which offers the homeowner a wonderful retreat. Wake up to the sights and sounds of the Bitterroot River from your bedroom with the french doors opening up to the attached porch. The master bathroom includes two separate vanities with granite countertops and hammered copper sinks, a large Jacuzzi soaking tub, separate enclosed steam shower, compartmentalized toilet and heated stone floors. Separate his and her walk in closets are attached to the bath suite.
The second floor is designed for family and guests. Two separate ensuite guest rooms are on either side of the second office or gathering area which overlooks the living room below. The guest rooms are well appointed and incorporates the rich Montana colors found throughout the four seasons. Each attached guest bathroom also has heated floors and full size showers and vanities.
A separate 720 sq ft studio building was designed to incorporate the well-lit artists studio, an individual work out room, a separate enclosed room perfect for your Montana toys and an extra garage bay with additional storage.
The 2 car heated detached garage was planned to accommodate full size vehicles with an attached hobby room. The game room above the garage completes the second building with a full bath and two built in extra-long twin beds.
Gardeners will be delighted with the charming oversized fenced garden complete with drip irrigation and vegetable washing sink.
The property is accessed off of a paved road and has a gated entry with a security system. The residence is comfortably controlled with forced air heating and central air conditioning. There is a sound system wired in the living, dining and entertainment porch areas. The mechanics include a Rennai hot water system, humidification linked to the furnace, water filtering system and generator to power the entire property. Underground sprinklers keep the landscaping lush.
The blue ribbon Bitterroot River is home to robust cutthroat, browns, brookies and rainbow. The river is wide enough for floating but is also gentle to enjoy wade fishing. The springtime Skwalla hatch is the official opening of the flyfishing season which usually begins early April. It is an easy drive to fish the famous Blackfoot River, the Clark Fork River, Rock Creek, the Missouri River and the West and East Forks of the Bitterroot River.
In addition to fishing all four season recreational opportunities are close including the Bitterroot Selway Wilderness Area offering 1.3 million acres for hiking, hunting and exploration. This is the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states. It is also close to Lost Trail and Snow Bowl local alpine ski resorts, the groomed cross country ski trails at Chief Joseph Pass and Lolo Pass and snowmobiling.
